The year is almost halfway over. The sun is shining, flowers are blooming and birds are chirping. You’ve probably heard about spring cleaning your home. Did you know that spring is also the perfect time to spruce up your job search? It’s true! The second quarter (April, May and June) is often peak hiring season as employees leave and budgets are finalized. Just as spring is the time to swap your sweaters for short-sleeve shirts, this is also the time to retool your job search. Before the competition increases after college graduation, read below on how I used the below 3 strategies to spring clean my job search and landed an offer before summer during a previous job search.
SPRUCE UP YOUR RESUME
Decluttering and swapping isn’t just for your closet. You spent the first quarter doing lots of things that need to be added to your resume. Refresh your resume during spring. Think about the courses you took during the blizzard of 2026. Maybe you picked up some new AI skills or certificates. In this skills-based hiring trend, you definitely want to add relevant AI skills to your resume. If you’re currently employed, consider adding projects you worked on during the first quarter. You especially want to highlight any savings, revenue or efficiencies you created. Then consider changing the appearance by sprucing up fonts, pruning older positions from your resume and adding new ATS optimized keywords.
REFRESH YOUR DIGITAL PRESENCE
After you give your resume a spring cleaning, do the same for your digital presence. Review and update your LinkedIn profile as well as profiles such as Indeed. Update your photo, headline, skills, experience and what you’re looking for. Your digital profile should match your resume. Consider creating content as a way to reach more people and explain exactly what type of role you are looking for.
GET OUTSIDE AND SPRING CLEAN YOUR NETWORK
Warm weather and sunshine is the perfect time to meet people in-person. After the cold weather kept people indoors all winter, people are excited to be outside and meet others. Attend networking events in your industry or even in other fields. Find events through your alumni association, Eventbrite and local organizations. Follow these tips to network at spring events. Remember, it’s not always what you know but who you know that can matter more when you’re looking for a job.
SPRING INTO ACTION
With almost half the year over, spring is the right time to change your job search strategy. When I stopped only applying to jobs online and started attending more events, I started getting different results. I met fellow alumni at events, which led to introductions to other people. After I began updating my resume and LinkedIn profile quarterly, the number of views increased and I increased my connections. As a result of changing my strategy, I gained new opportunities. Spring is a time of growth, renewal, optimism and promise. With summer just around the corner, now is the time to try all or even one of these strategies today. Give your resume a makeover, refresh your digital presence and put yourself out there by going to a spring mixer. For more tips, check out the resources found here.
