SEARCHING FOR A JOB OR SEARCHING FOR LOVE ONLINE – iT’S ALL THE SAME

Valentine’s Day season is filled with hearts, chocolate, and conversations about love. But if you’re currently job searching, you might be noticing an unexpected parallel: finding a job today feels a lot like online dating.

If you’ve ever wondered, “Is it just me, or does this job search feel exactly like dating?”—you’re not alone. In today’s digital-first hiring market, both job searching and online dating require an online presence, strategy, emotional resilience, and a healthy dose of patience. And yes—ghosting happens in both.

Why the Job Search Feels Like Online Dating

Modern hiring has shifted heavily online. Resumes, LinkedIn profiles, and applicant tracking systems (ATS) now act as your “dating profile” in the professional world. Recruiters and employers swipe through applications quickly, often making decisions in seconds.

First Impressions Matter:
Your resume and LinkedIn profile are your digital first impression.

Searching for the Right Match:
Company culture, values, flexibility, and growth opportunities matter.

Communication Counts:
Cover letters and networking messages are your opening lines.

Rejection Is Part of the Process:
Not every application leads to an interview.

Timing Is Everything:
Prompt responses and early applications matter.

Job Boards, Dating Apps, and Networking

While most jobs live on job boards, many opportunities come through networking—industry groups, volunteering, and community spaces.

Job Search Tips Inspired by Online Dating

Optimize Your Professional Profiles:
Use a clear, benefit-driven headline.

Personalize Your Outreach:
Reference something specific about the company or role.

Don’t Internalize Rejection:
It’s part of the process.

Network with Intention:
Relationship-building is powerful.

Trust Your Instincts:
Be on the lookout for the red flags in the online job search just as you would with dating.

Finding “The One” in Your Career Takes Strategy

The goal isn’t just to get hired—it’s to find work that aligns with your values and well-being. We just received the latest jobs report. Unemployment is slightly down from December. 130,000 new jobs. Finding “the one” takes time and effort.

JOB BOARDS OR DATING APPS OR MAYBE BOTH: DATING APPS ARE NOT JUST FOR ONLINE DATING ANYMORE

We’ve all heard of the men (or women) sliding into someone’s DMs on LinkedIn. But did you know that people use dating apps not just to find love but also jobs? When I was on dating apps, I had random men message me specifically saying they were looking for a job. While those instances didn’t lead to jobs for those men, more and more desperate job seekers are turning to dating apps fo find jobs. Since that comes with risks and ethical dilemmas, I recommend a more traditional approach.

Have you ever been to a networking event? I’ve always called them the meat market because people are obviously not just there to make business connections. They are there to meet people. But sometimes what starts out as a business connection can lead to a date and vice versa. Maybe you’re on a date and you decide to just be friends. But then that date could lead to an introduction that can lead to another introduction. Put yourself out there and attend professional and social events. You just never know who you’ll meet. By embracing strategies from online dating dating apps, you can make your job search more engaging, proactive, and ultimately successful. Keep swiping, networking, and presenting your authentic self—you never know when you’ll find your perfect job match!
